Who lived on the territory of the British Isles at the dawn of British History? When did Romans begin to conquer Britain? What did the Celts learn from the Romans? When did Germanic tribes invade Britain? Which dialect became predominant? Speak about the raids on Britain by the Danes. Give examples of Scandinavian borrowings. Who invaded Britain in the 11th century? How did the English language change? How are new words added to the language? One of the ways to add new words to the language is borrowing. Can you give evidence? Another way is word-building. Give examples of affixes of different parts of speech. Apple-tree, pencil-box, skateboard …Why are these words called compounds? Can you explain what conversion is. E.g.: work – to work, a change-to change, get up early – an early morning.
